EmTech MIT 2022: A Transformative Experience at the Forefront of Innovation
This past week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend EmTech MIT, hosted by MIT Technology Review—a three-day deep dive into the cutting edge of science and technology. From thought-provoking discussions with industry titans to exploring futuristic innovations that feel straight out of science fiction, the experience was nothing short of inspiring.
What made this even more special was the fact that I attended through a scholarship awarded to me in recognition of my application, where I reflected on what it means to be a Latina woman and an international student in STEM. This scholarship granted me access to a truly remarkable room filled with some of the brightest minds in science and technology, an experience I will forever cherish.
It’s difficult to fully encapsulate the wealth of knowledge and insight shared during the event, but I wanted to highlight some of the moments that left a lasting impact on me.
Moonshots, AI, and the Future of Humanity
One of the most thrilling sessions was learning about moonshot thinking with Benoit Schillings, CTO at Google X, and Marianna Bonanome, exploring how bold, paradigm-shifting ideas shape the future. This was followed by an electrifying session featuring Kizzmekia S. Corbett, Ph.D., who played a pivotal role in tackling COVID-19. Her insights into vaccine development and global health strategies were awe-inspiring.
US-China Relations and the Global Impact on Science & Technology
Yangyang Cheng delivered a compelling talk on the precarious nature of the US-China relationship in technology development. The intricate geopolitical challenges and their impact on scientific progress provided a sobering yet necessary perspective on the broader implications of tech innovation.
The Future of Medicine & CRISPR Therapeutics
A highlight of the event was the panel featuring Noubar Afeyan, CEO and Founder of Flagship Pioneering, alongside Dr. Kiran Musunuru, discussing the evolution of programmable medicine and how CRISPR therapeutics is revolutionizing the way we approach genetic medicine. The potential impact of these advancements on personalized healthcare and disease prevention is staggering.
Building Resilient Technology Systems
In a world increasingly shaped by digital ecosystems, discussions led by Sunita Patel, Deputy Assistant National Cyber Director at the Executive Office of the President, and Renee DiResta, Research Manager at Stanford Internet Observatory, focused on the urgent need for tech policies that enhance security, privacy, and resilience. Their insights into combatting misinformation, cyber threats, and global tech governance were eye-opening.
Wearable Tech & Bionics – Meeting a Personal Hero
One of the most surreal and exciting moments for me was meeting Hugh Herr, a pioneer in bionics and prosthetics. Having followed his groundbreaking work since the age of 12 through his TED Talks, I was thrilled to hear him speak about the future of wearable technology and human augmentation. Alongside Naoji Matsuhisa, Associate Professor at The University of Tokyo, they explored skin-conformable and stretchable polymer semiconductors, unveiling a new frontier in healthcare applications.
Advancements in AI & ML – A Glimpse into the Future
Artificial Intelligence took center stage with sessions featuring Vishal Sharma, VP of Alexa AI at Amazon, offering an exclusive sneak peek into the latest ML algorithms that power Alexa.

One of the most enriching aspects of EmTech MIT was the opportunity to engage in one-on-one discussions with not only these visionary leaders but also with other MIT faculty, Innovators Under 35, and impressive attendees. The depth of knowledge, curiosity, and passion within this community was truly humbling.
From casual chats to receiving career advice from some of the brightest minds in AI, cybersecurity, biotech, and policy, this event reinforced my excitement about the future of science, technology, and innovation.
Final Thoughts
EmTech MIT was an unparalleled experience—a convergence of breakthrough ideas, world-class talent, and deep intellectual curiosity. Attending through a scholarship that recognized my journey as a Latina woman in STEM made this experience even more meaningful.
I walk away feeling more inspired than ever to push boundaries, explore new frontiers, and contribute to meaningful innovation.
